Main Responsibilities

  • Build and prototype risk models — fraud scoring, anomaly detection, screening heuristics — and translate outputs into clear operational solutions.
  • Critically evaluate data — challenge assumptions, validate signals, and ensure models are grounded in real-world risk behavior.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders — partner with Risk, Compliance, and Ops to scope, test, and integrate models that meaningfully reduce loss or manual effort.
  • Communicate and present — turn data findings into clear insights, dashboards, and visual representations for clearer understanding
  • Ship production-grade code — work alongside software engineers to integrate models into live systems and automate feedback loops.
  • Continuously improve — track performance, detect model drift, and evolve detection logic as fraud patterns shift.

‍

What You Bring

  • Fluent in SQL and Python; comfortable writing clean, production-ready data science code.
  • Experience with fraud/risk data, anomaly detection, or decision systems
  • Strong command of data wrangling, feature engineering, and evaluation  from exploratory analysis to statistical testing.
  • Clear communicator: able to prototype fast, present clearly, and think critically about data integrity and business impact.
  • Bonus: familiarity with BI Tools**, dbt, and warehouse modeling (Snowflake/BigQuery).

‍

Who You Are

  • You’re an analytical thinker who loves turning messy, real-world data into clear, actionable insight.
  • You’re curious by nature. You question assumptions, trace anomalies to their root causes, and constantly look for better signals.
  • You thrive in collaborative, high-stakes environments, working with engineers, analysts, and compliance partners to ship systems that matter.
  • You’re motivated by impact, not just accuracy. You care that your models reduce loss, save time, and make financial systems fairer and safer.
  • You take ownership from notebook to production, ensuring models stay reliable and evolve as fraud patterns shift.

What We Offer

  • Hands-on experience with high-impact compliance and risk automation systems.
  • Mentorship from senior engineers and cross-functional collaboration across fraud, data, and compliance teams.
  • A front-row seat in a mission-driven fintech tackling some of Africa’s most complex technical challenges.
  • Exposure to the full product lifecycle—from ideation to deployment—in a high-growth startup.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 2+ years of experience in data engineering, preferably within fintech, banking, or compliance-driven environments.

  • Strong proficiency in SQL, Python, and modern data engineering frameworks (e.g., Airflow, dbt, Spark, Kafka).

  • Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift).
  • Familiarity with data modeling, ETL design, and streaming data architectures.

  • Understanding of fraud detection systems, AML/KYC processes, or regulatory data reporting is an added advantage.

  • Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Location:

This role is based in Nigeria and follows a hybrid work arrangement. Candidates must be currently residing in Nigeria and able to collaborate with both local and remote teams.
